Starting a locally installed module on JBoss

I am trying to run a local jar file on my JBoss server. I created a file application.xml to start the module and added it as a sys:module in JBoss 7. The module’s JAR file is in the modules/com.abc.xyz directory, so I believe it should be picked up automatically (based on the example) but it isn’t. I always get a stack trace in my Tomcat logs that ends with:

Can someone shed light on how to get it running? I did not have to go through all the steps to get the WAR working, so I am assuming the fact that the JAR file is in the right place means it’s not getting started.
