AutoCAD can trace its beginnings to the late 1960s and early 1970s when the predecessor to Autodesk, The Charles Simonyi Charles Simonyi Foundation, a Hungarian private think tank, developed and hosted the computer graphics package known as «Lantana» to develop and publish pioneering research in computer graphics. The name Lantana is pronounced as «Lana-tan-nah».
In late 1982, Simonyi’s company, The Charles Simonyi Charles Simonyi Foundation, launched a beta version of AutoCAD for the Apple II (for both 16k and 24k models) and TRS-80 (for 24k only) as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. The Macintosh version was developed by California software house, Autodesk.
AutoCAD 2.0 was released to retail for the Apple II, TRS-80 and the Macintosh in 1983. The first release was distributed to individual software resellers, who sold individual copies for $250. The first release to the general public was made available to about 50 software resellers, who sold AutoCAD 2 for $3,995. The first Macintosh version was released in 1986.
In 1982, the first versions of Autocad were licensed to a company called Pacific Software Development, but the original team had left Autodesk to start their own company, Microtec. On June 25, 1983, Autodesk formed a licensing agreement with Microtec, thus becoming the first licensee of AutoCAD. The first licensed version of AutoCAD was named AutoCAD 2.
In 1985, Autodesk released the first version of AutoCAD 3D, a 3-D drawing package, as part of the AutoCAD 3D Designer package. This package allowed the user to build 3-D models that could then be viewed from any angle and from any location, including on a personal computer. It was the first CAD system to include a component-based approach, where the individual object types are the building blocks of the design. It allowed designers to construct objects directly in the context of the project. The AutoCAD 3D package was available for the Macintosh, IBM PC/XT, and Apple II.
In late 1984, the AutoCAD system was originally named «Systems & Technologies AutoCAD». Autodesk would later assign the AutoC

3D model formats such as STEP and VRML are also supported by the program.
A detailed list of supported file formats can be found on the Autodesk blog (for AutoCAD).
AutoCAD cannot import files in formats that are not readable by AutoCAD. For example, G-Code does not support import into AutoCAD.
AutoCAD supports shortcut keys for common commands. The shortcuts for AutoCAD are listed at the bottom of the Shortcut Key Chart.
In May 1992, AutoCAD started as a PC application but was designed from the beginning to be scalable to multiple platforms.
AutoCAD was first released for Windows 3.1 and was created by a team of engineers from the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). This was a product of the Integrated Systems Research Group (ISRG) and was called the Integrated Systems Technology Group (ISTG). Many ISRG products were later transferred to PARC in 1994 and renamed to the Advanced Technology group (ATG). ATG was renamed and combined with the CAD Group in 2001. The new name was the PARC CAD Group. In 2007, the PARC CAD Group was combined with a group of AutoDesk employees to form the Autodesk, Inc. CAD Group, which then became the Autodesk Inventor group. In 2014, the group was renamed to the Autodesk Research group.

What’s New in the?
Tools to help you make decisions:
Create cost/value analysis with an interactive heatmap. Change the number of items in your analysis, then create heatmaps that quickly show the impact of changes. (video: 1:41 min.)
Art & Drawing:
Collaborate with AI in real-time. Work together in a shared drawing, and collaborate using your phone or tablet. AI will get the design right the first time. (video: 2:20 min.)
If you are interested in AutoCAD, consider subscribing to AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD MEP, or AutoCAD Mechanical.
