.NET no-op garbage collector

I am confused as to whether.NET’s no-op garbage collector can be triggered.
I assume that it can because I have seen code like the following that I believe should trigger it:
object o = null;
// Wait a while, then check if the object o is still null.

Of course, at this point the garbage collector should not run, but it does.
I do not understand this. Why does the CLR not realize that the object is null and therefore it is not required to trace its live references (i.e. it is a «dead» object).
What am I missing here?
I am running.NET 4.0 on Windows 7.


Even the.NET Framework 4.0 has a built in garbage collector which is used to optimize memory.
Because the main objective of the garbage collector is to do its job in as short time as possible.
So it does not check whether the object reference is null or not, it simply removes the reference.


How to determine if given date is in the next or previous year

I have a basic variable that holds a date in the past. Let’s say it’s 2016-02-13.
How can I compare it to the current date and determine if the current date is the previous or next year.
I’ve found the Javascript solution from this question:
