From texting to hookup apps like Grindr and Scruff, casual sex has never been hotter. Even if it’s completely imaginary, at least through all the dating websites, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google and more. But are these things really great for our love lives or are they just more ways to hook up?
It could be the smartest thing you ever said
We know hooking up isn’t for everyone — or at least, we thought we knew that. Then again, most people were shut out of the modern hookup equation by their parents. They taught us that we were supposed to have a future together as a couple. So meeting someone in the proverbial hall and then picking up with them in their bedroom? Well that was just weird.
There are few challenges of casual sex that we face in our society right now, but we also have very good reason to believe that we’re going to continue to see increasing opportunities for casual sexual liaisons, possibly on an almost daily basis. Casual sex is a tricky beast, and you shouldn’t hold yourself and your body to a standard that’s at all possible to achieve.

The trend of hooking up a lot of people, sometimes is new and not for everyone, and I am not saying that because that is me. I like having a lot of sex and do not have the same rules about having sex every three months as another person may. When I wanted to start a family I just wanted to have more sex and it was great. I think that it was this connection that I started to have with my body. Not everyone who has casual sex is there just for the sex. Some have deeper connect with their bodies and I am not suggesting that casual sex is not for everyone.

Whether casual sex is good or bad for your health has been the subject of intense debate for several years. Regardless of whether it is a good or bad thing, there are always people to be concerned about.
A recent study of more than 4,000 college students by Rosemary Basson, a professor of psychological sciences at King’s College London, indicated that casual sexual encounters (defined as “unprotected sex with someone you don’t know well” — which is still the only accepted definition of casual sex) are related to increased risk of catching an STI, particularly herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1. Since HSV-1 is the most common cause of genital herpes in the United States and Canada, this means that casual sex is more likely to result in you getting this viral disease. Other STIs like chlamydia and syphilis pose significant health risks, too.
And while most casual sexual encounters are harmless, prolonged or poorly guarded sex can put you at greater risk for a sexually transmitted infection, including HIV, said Dr. Basson. This is especially true for those between the ages of 18 and 24. If you’re not having sex or don’t know your partner’s sexual history, the chances of contracting an STI from a casual sexual encounter are greater.
Unfortunately, protecting yourself against STIs — or protecting your partners if you’re the one on the receiving end of a sexual encounter — isn’t that easy. While condoms are helpful, they don’t always work and they aren’t 100 percent effective. But there are better ways to protect yourself from acquiring STIs.
Condoms are primarily a way of preventing pregnancy, although they also reduce the risk of infection. But they work best if they are used consistently and correctly. If you’re sexually active with a partner who does not want to use condoms every time, consider getting a birth control injection or vaginal ring that can protect against pregnancy and STIs. These contraceptive options are much more effective than condoms and will not degrade with frequent use.
There are even some non-contraceptive options for those who aren’t using hormonal contraception and don’t wish to be. These include external barrier methods such as female condoms and vaginal sponges, male circumcision, female circumcision, and abstinence. All of these methods are becoming more and more readily available for people to access. However, abstinence is by far the most effective way to avoid getting an STI.
That doesn’t mean that all casual sexual encounters are filled with doom
